Since Forbes unveiled its list of the richest persons in China recently, many people feel more conformed in their belief that wealth is the symbol of success. There is, of course, some truth in this saying, but it is still my conviction that success means more than money.
Success can be achieved in many other ways than wealth. Medical scientists, for example, may gain a major breakthrough in SARS research, which in turn will save many lives and restore patients’ confidence in life. It is definitely a success which will benefit human beings all over the world. Likewise, social scientists who can find solutions to problems like social security, crimes, traffic jams and unemployment will surely have contributed enormously to the stability and thus progress of the society. No one would deny that it is a success. And even a teacher who can cultivate noble virtues and good values in his students is undoubtedly a success. He has helped to ensure the transmission of noble virtues of human civilization.
In my opinion, wealth is just one way of measuring one’s success, but not the only one. People can achieve success in many other ways so long as he or she can contribute positively to the society. And I’m confident that they will win the respect and love of the public.
Never Too Old to Learn
Learning is one of the most important things in one’s life, especially for children being educated in schools of different levels. They learn languages, mathematics, history, geography and so on. They must know that they should acquire as much knowledge as possible, which can help them know better about the outside world and develop themselves for their future career.
As for grown-ups, even the aged, learning is important as well. Although they have studied something for many years, and have learned a lot already, there are still some experiences and laws summed up or discovered by our predecessors (前辈) for them to learn. Moreover, the world keeps changing unceasingly. There is always something new for them to learn. Thus, they must be aware that they should stick to (坚持) learning throughout their lives. Constant learning can make people become more learned and experienced so that they can suit the changing world better.

Patriotism
Patriotism (爱国主义) implies a love for one’s country. It is the noblest of human sentiments. Every citizen should possess some spirit of patriotism. Patriotism, however, is not to be testified (证明，证实) by the tongue (语言); it should be manifested (表明；证实) in action. With this definite object in view (被考虑), one must do his best for his country, and, at any moment, be ready to make sacrifices (做出牺牲) for her. The man who posesses such will is a patriot at heart (在内心里，本质上).
Patriotism may be shown in various ways: soldiers display it by fighting for or defending their counrty; businessmen by carrying on trade with foreign countries, and thus increasing her wealth; farmers and miners by bringing out her natural produce and supplying her trade and industrial production; scientists express it by doing constant research work so that more advanced technology can be introduced and utilized in the construction of their country; students can show it by studying hard, and with their knowledge thus gained, they may serve their country in the future. Who are all these but (除了) true patriots?
Our Responsibility
We Chinese place a high value on responsibility. It is traditional for us Chinese to take care of our parents. We owe them a great deal for the love they gave us while we were growing up. It is right then, when they are getting older with each passing day, that we help them and see that they are well cared for. In this way, we give back some of the love and care they gave to us.
As loyal Chinese citizens, we must have a strong sense of responsibility to our country. It is our duty to deep China strong in the eyes of the world. Therefore, we should obey its laws, its taxes, and the government. We should study and work hard for China’s prosperity which also depends on advanced science and technology. We must be willing to join the Army and defend our country, should we be threatend by an invader. In short, to be a responsible citizen, we must put our country’s welfare above our own needs.
Finally, we must remember that we have a responsibility to the world we live in. It is important that we learn to live in peace with the other nations of the world, and to protect our environment. If we carry out these responsibilities, we will be respected citizens of our country.
